June 19, 1998
Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of the Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run. As many of you know, it was a misfit crew of 8 runners who first set out in July 1989 to start this tradition. Little did those intrepid souls know what they would spawn. This letter outlines some of the important things to keep in mind as you approach race day. On the back is an detailed schedule of Knee Knacker activities.
Your 98 race committee is a collection of highly professional scoundrels, led by the Grand Poo-Bah scalawag, me! This feisty group gelled into a workable, cohesive unit only after liberal quantities of beer, supplied by R & B Brewing, were made available at meetings. It amazes me how much volunteer work people will do for a pint of free beer! Without further embarrassment, your 1998 Race Committee:
Aid Stations - Jim Helten
Administration and Website Guru - Enzo Federico
Course - Paul Quinn
Awards Banquet - Amanda Barlow
Like last year, we are having two race packet pickup nights. This is MANDATORY on one of these nights (we will not be giving out any race packages on race day). However, a friend can pick up your package. A race briefing, Friday July 10th at 7:15 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. is MANDATORY for 1st time Knee Knackerers. On the Saturday morning, just prior to the race start, a brief trail talk will be given.
Strict adherence to cut-off times will be followed in 1998 due to problems encountered last year. The cutoff times are as follows: Cypress Bowl 9:00 a.m. (3 hours), Cleveland Dam 11 a.m. (5 hours), Seymour Demonstration Forest 1:30 p.m. (7.5 hours), Finish line 4 p.m. (10 hours). Our goal is to have everyone finish within the 10 hour time limit, but if you miss any of these cutoff times, you are officially out of the race.
Check out the Knee Knacker website for the latest race information. You can find information on race entrants, group training runs, course description (detailed!) and hints & tips. The site can be found at http://home.bc.rogers.wave.ca/federico/.
We have over 200 volunteers for this years race. Many of them have been with us for most of the years the event has run. Take time to smile and thank them for their effort as you go by. Without them, this race couldnt be run!
I look forward to seeing you all on July 9th, 10th or 11th. Enjoy your taper - I know I have!
Ken Greenaway
