The following report isn't intended to scare runners, but to hopefully give current conditions to allow you to better prepare for KneeKnacker '99 - The Snow Year!
The Black Mtn. section of the Baden-Powell trail from Eagle Bluff to Cypress Bowl is currently unrecognizable. Snow is over 6 meters (20 feet) in spots! Trail markers, usually found on trees around the 7-8 ft. mark, are buried. This is making navigation a challenge. Combined with the seemingly constant rain and fog in Vancouver and it becomes a true test of character! However, I don't expect this section to present any additional safety concerns to the normal trail conditions.
The Cypress Bowl to Hollyburn section is also completely covered. In addition to the
navigational problems, runners have to cross three major streams via snow bridges. To give
those that are familiar with the course a flavor of the conditions - I ran this section
last weekend and didn't even know I had gone over the last major creek and bridge before
the top of Hollyburn. And once there I was surrounded with numerous black bear tracks!
Note: We have a fallback plan in place for this section if conditions are
unsafe for race day.
The race committee will mark all the snow sections of the trail this weekend and will provide a further update of the conditions next week.
