Cleveland Dam to Cypress & Return (modified) ... by Curb Ivanic

The word must be getting out about how much fun we have on these runs as 55+ people turned out for today's run.  The weather was absolutely fantastic today with bright blue skies and warm temps.  Noticeably MIA was Paul Quinn, again.  I guess he must be in full stealth training mode.  Paul, is a stealth training mile the same as a regular training mile?

After hearing snow reports from various runners who were up around Cypress the past week we modified today's run.  The alternate route was to run up the Hollyburn Chute to the Skyline Trail, take this to the top Cypress lookout, run up the road to the cross country ski trails and make our way back to the BP and return down the Chute.  As we headed out from Cleveland Dam, we were joined by Eric "The Jet" Langhjelm for the second leg of his run.  Apparently he was doing hill repeats on the Hollyburn Chute and Skyline Trail. (Ed.'s note: Eric was 2nd in last year's KK and the overall winner in the this year's Diez Vista 50K).  Kendall and myself kept up with Eric the Jet for about 5 minutes before realizing the folly of our ways.  He took off and the next time we saw him was at the turnaround as he was heading back.  He's definitely training to win this year.  Good luck Eric!

But the lead group of twelve or so weren't exactly dogging it as we made our way up the Chute and Skyline Trail.  The same group of keeners (you know who you are) who've been out the last few weeks were back, pushing my butt all the way up the trail and road.  Tried as I might I couldn't slow this pack down.

Spreading out a little as we headed up the road, we regrouped at the cross country area to run down the snow as a group.  Snow bridges and sinkholes can be pretty hazardous and we didn't want anyone getting hurt.  I think I can say that we actually had fun running on the snow and it wasn't too bad, though I'm glad we didn't run up this way; it would have been a pretty tough slog..  Thanks to Stephen and Glen for leading and finding all the weak spots for me ;-)

After we got through the snow the group spread out once again as we blasted down the Chute.  Its always fun running down this route and today was no exception.  The quads definitely got a workout.  However once we got back to Cleveland Dam we realized the run was a little short so we decided to run up the (Nancy) Greene (Way) Mile to the bottom of the Grind and back just to add a bit more time.  All in all the lead pack finished in 3 hours; a great training run that included hill training, snow running, long downhill and heat acclimation.  You can't beat that!  Smiles were on everyone's face as we finished.

Remember, next Saturday is the trail work party.  Come on out for some free treats from Delany's and help keep "our" trail in good condition.  The run next Sunday will be a tough one; we'll run from Grouse to Old Buck and return.  The meeting time for all the runs from now on will be 7:00 a.m.  Hope to see an even bigger turnout next weekend.

Have fun on the trails!
